Spartans set for Homestand Against District of Columbia and Virginia State

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team will play at home for the first time in the 2025-26 season this week, hosting District of Columbia on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m., and Virginia State on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 4:30 p.m., at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall.
 
About the Matchups
Norfolk State and UDC will meet for the 15th time, with the all-time series tied 7-7. The programs last met during the 1994-95 season, when UDC earned a 96-94 victory.
 
NSU will face Virginia State for the 54th time on Sunday. The Spartans lead the all-time series 35-18. The teams last met in the 1997-98 season, when Norfolk State won 108-69.
 
Last Time Out
Norfolk State fell to No. 12 Ole Miss 87-46 on Monday, Nov. 3. The Spartans shot 41.5 percent from the field (17-of-41) and 71.4 percent at the free-throw line (10-of-14). Ole Miss held a 42-21 advantage on the boards.

  • Cire Worley grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
  • The game marked Jermaine Woods' debut as Norfolk State's head coach.
  • NSU is now 5-11 in road season openers in the school's Division I history. 

Protecting our House
Norfolk State carries a 26-game home winning streak dating back to February 2023, the longest active home winning streak in NCAA Division I. Texas trails the Spartans by one game with 25 straight home wins, while TCU has won 24 straight home contests.

NSU was one of 13 Division I programs to finish the 2024-25 season unbeaten at home, posting a 13-0 record at Echols Hall. It marked the Spartans' second straight undefeated home season. Norfolk State is 58-10 at home over the last five seasons and was one of two HBCUs to finish undefeated at home last season.
 
Scouting the Firebirds
UDC enters the matchup 0-0. The Firebirds fell to George Washington 86-47 in an exhibition to open the year. District of Columbia posted a 10-17 record last season, including a 8-8 record in ECC play.
  • Maya Johnson and Dashani Coleman scored 10 points each against GWU.
  • LeAsia Todd added six points and a team-high six rebounds vs. GWU.
  • UDC shot 37.0 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from 3-point range against George Washington.
  • Head coach John Nakpodia is in his ninth season leading the program.

Scouting the Trojans
Virginia State enters the matchup 0-0, with Sunday's matchup serving as the Trojans' season opener. VSU went 23-7 last year and finished 13-2 in CIAA play. The Trojans reached the NCAA Atlantic Regional, falling to Edinboro 80-68 in the opening round.
  • Returner Kendahl Spearman averaged 5.4 points per game last season.
  • VSU was picked second in the CIAA preseason poll.
  • Head coach Millette Green is in her first season leading the program.

A look ahead
Norfolk State will hit the road following a two-game homestand, traveling to its second nationally ranked opponent of the season. The Spartans will face No. 7 Duke on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m., inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
