Spartans End Series Against Mercyhurst and Saint Peter’s in a Sweep

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State softball team defeated Saint Peter's (6-3) and Mercyhurst (6-2) in back-to-back games on Saturday to finish out the weekend series at the NSU Softball Field.

Norfolk State (3-1) faced off against Mercyhurst (0-2) in game one defeating the Lakers after putting up six runs in three innings.

It all started in fourth behind two runs scored on two Laker errors, putting the Spartans up 2-1. Maddy Morris hit a solo home run in the fifth to extend Norfolk's lead, 3-1.

The Spartans put up three insurance runs in the sixth on four hits. Qween Olivia Edmonds doubled and advanced on a passed ball before being run in on a sacrifice by Bristyl Riddick.

Emree Sky Obispo singled and stole second before being scored by Kira Turner's deep double to center field.

Sophomore Kailey Bryant received the win after pitching a perfect game with five strikeouts through 7.0 innings. Bryant is tied for first on the team in hits (6) and RBIs (3).

Game one saw six different Spartans garner a steal: Bryant, Lauren Sheehan, Aniyah Michalak, Bristyl Riddick, and Sky Obispo. Norfolk State committed no errors as well in a perfect performance on all levels.

In game two, Saint Peter's took an early 3-0 lead at the top of the second. However it was short lived as Maya Johnson would hit a home run in the bottom of the second to close in on the Peacock's lead, 3-1.

Morris secured the game-tying run in the third on a two-RBI single to left center, 3-3. Edmonds single to left field to give the Spartans the lead, 4-3. Insurance runs by Amaya McPherson in the fourth and Qween Edmonds in the fifth gave the Spartans their 6-3 win.

Freshman pitcher made her collegiate debut against Mercyhurst, garnering the win in 7.0 innings, allowing only three runs, striking out four, two hits, one run, and an RBI.

Edmonds finished with four hits, three doubles, two RBIs, two runs in six at-bats across both games.

Norfolk State canceled the last two games of the series on Sunday against Mercyhurst, so its next home series will be in a doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's on Friday, Feb. 21.
