Tyler Strikes Out Seven in Game One Rout

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State hosted Mount St. Mary's Sunday evening in Norfolk for a doubleheader, splitting the series at the NSU Softball Field.

The Spartans (4-2) changed its schedule to face off against the Mountaineers (1-1) due to weather. Game one Norfolk State secured a 5-1 victory, before falling 5-2 in game two.

Norfolk State won game one behind an incredible pitching performance by Brierra Tyler and a two-RBI performance by Kailey Bryant.

After giving up the only run in the top of the second inning, Tyler showed dominance through the last five innings, putting together scoreless innings in each, allowing no runs, along with four strikeouts.

Tyler finished with seven strikeouts, just one short of tying her career-high.

Leadoff batter Bryant secured two RBIs on two hits and drew one walk in game one. Bryant has garnered RBIs in all but one appearance this season through six games.

Bryant put the first score on the board for the Spartans in the bottom of the second on a bunt single to third base. The game was tied at one run going into the third inning.

Sophomore pitcher Maddy Morris hit her second home run of the year to deep center field to give the Spartans the lead, which they would never relinquish.

Three insurance runs were put up by NSU in the bottom of the fourth on creative plays by Bryant and Aniyah Michalak

With two on and no outs, Bryant hit a sacrifice bunt and advanced on a throw to score a runner from third and advance a runner to second. Michalak sacrifice bunted to score a run, whilst also putting Bryant on third.

Bryant seized an opportunity on third base to score, after the Mountaineers threw a wild pitch. The Spartans went up 5-1, winning the game easily behind great base running, pitching, and contact hitting.

In game two, Morris pitched (#) innings, collecting (three) consecutive scoreless innings. Morris secured her second extra base hit of the day with a double in the bottom of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, freshman catcher Bristyl Riddick hit a leadoff single to center field before advancing to second on a wild pitch.

Kachelle Refour hit a hard bunt single down the left field line, clearly beating the throw from the third baseman to advance Riddick to third. Refour stole second to put runners in scoring position for the Spatans.

Bryant gave the Spartans the lead on a two-RBI single to left field whilst advancing to second on an error. Norfolk State took a 2-1 lead over the Mountaineers heading into the sixth inning.

Mount St. Mary's tied the game at 2-2 on a score from a wild pitch in the sixth. After a scoreless bottom of the sixth by the Spartans, the game was tied heading into the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Mountaineers scored three runs on one hit to take a 5-3 lead.

The Spartans host St. Bonaventure tomorrow in a doubleheader at home, with the first game set to start at 12 p.m.
