Norfolk State Takes Second at MEAC Indoor Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The Norfolk State women's track team earned a second-place finish at the MEAC Indoor Championships on Monday afternoon.
 
Howard won the title with 256 points. NSU followed with 135 points, while North Carolina Central took third with 60 points.
 
Brooklyn Robinson took down her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles, placing second with a time of 8.26. She also clocked a time of 7.70 to place eighth in the 60 meters.
 
Leanna Lewis earned a gold medal in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 2:11.59. Jahmei Wyatt finished seventh with a time of 2:23.91 in the same event.
 
The team of Kadynce Taylor, Kalyncia Taylor, Allysia Farrar, and Lewis took home the silver medal in the 4x400 relay (3:48.90). Farrar also took fifth in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 24.54.
 
The Spartans earned a pair of spots on the podium in the mile with Wyatt finishing second (5:05.69), while Mercyline Kimaiyo placed third (5:08.47).
 
Emani Thompson clocked a fourth-place time of 5:10.56, while Abigael Chebet earned a fifth-place finish (5:10.56) in the same event. Sonia Koech rounded out the Spartans' finishers in the mile, taking seventh (5:21.45).
 
Kimaiyo took home the bronze medal in the 5,000 meters, finishing with a time of 18:17.73. Chebet took fourth (18:20.67) and Koech placed fifth (18:29.18).
 
D'Nysha Brightful earned the only gold medal in field events for NSU with her performance in the pole vault (10-2). Lexa Hunter followed in fourth place (8-8.25).
 
Aniah Kennerson took sixth in the high jump (5-3), while Essence Shaw took ninth place (5-1).
 
NSU also saw a pair of athletes compete in the shot put, with Leslie Young leading the way, taking eighth (37-6.5). Amanti Mayes followed right behind Young, taking ninth (36-4.25).
 
The Spartans now turn their attention to the NCAA Indoor Championships, taking place March 14-15 at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
