NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team split a pair of dual matches on Saturday, cruising past Chowan 4-0 before falling 4-0 to Maryland.
The Spartans opened the day with a quick and dominant victory over Chowan, starting with a sweep to secure the doubles point.
Irina Iurea and
Sabina Iurea started things off with a 6-1 triumph on Court 2, before
Caroline Nicholls and
Ines Sabadie won 6-0 on Court 3.
Sofiya Tsitavets and
Yuliya Yurkova improved to 4-0 as a tandem at the No. 1 position, earning a 6-2 victory to close out the first portion of the match.
The Spartans kept the momentum going in singles play. Nicholls cruised past Shreshta Pudecheri 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 slot, before Yurkova took down Feidi Abreu Rodriguez 6-0, 6-4 at the top spot of the lineup.
Angelena Maniawska got in the win column with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Aime Vera at the No. 3 position, clinching the dual match for the Spartans.
Irina Iurea won the first set 6-0 on Court 4, before her match went unfinished.
Playing against an ACC opponent in the second match of the day, Norfolk State could not muster enough early momentum to win the doubles point. The Terrapins earned 6-4 and 6-0 wins on Courts 1 and 2, respectively, to start singles play with a 1-0 lead.
Olrliwia Orlinksa defeated Maniawska 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 position, before Kallista Liu beat Tsitavets 6-0, 6-2 at the top spot in the lineup. Danielle Hack closed the match for Maryland with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nicholls at the No. 3 slot.
When play stopped,
Sabina Iurea held a 7-5, 1-0 lead on Court 6 while
Irina Iurea had just sent her match into a third set.
