NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State men's basketball guard
Brian Moore Jr. has been named a finalist for College Insider's 2024-25 Lou Henson Award, presented annually to the top college basketball player from a mid-major school.
Â
The Lou Henson award honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons. Moore is the only player from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) on this year's Lou Henson Award finalist list.
Â
Moore has taken the MEAC by storm in his lone season with the Spartans after transferring from Murray State. The Harlem, N.Y. product currently averages 18.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 55.5 percent from the floor and 41.5 percent from behind the arc. He is the only guard in the nation averaging at least 18 points per game while shooting 55.0 percent from the field or better (min. 20 games played).
Â
Receiving MEAC Player of the Week accolades five times this season, Moore has recorded three 30-point games including a 33-point outing at High Point. He earned the 2024-25 MEAC Newcomer of the Year award earlier this week at the conference's annual awards ceremony.
Â
Henson, who is also the all-time winningest coach in New Mexico State history with 289 victories, is one of only 11 coaches to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His teams have made 19 NCAA appearances and four NIT appearances.
Â
The recipient of the award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com.
The 2025 award will be announced in San Antonio, TX, site of the men's Division I Basketball Championship.
