Michalak Secured Two Extra Base Hits Against the River Hawks

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State fell to UMass Lowell Sunday afternoon, 6-5 in seven innings at the NSU Softball Field, following an hour delay in play.

Leading the way for the Spartans (6-7) was Aniyah Michalak. Michalak tallied two hits, two RBIs, two runs on a double and a triple.

Michalak's RBI triple came in the second inning, to give the Spartans the lead over the River Hawks.

UMass Lowell (2-10) took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on three hits for three runs, but the lead was short lived after the Spartans scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Pivotal stolen bases in the bottom of the fifth allowed the Spartans to put runners in scoring position. Victoria Taylor ran in on a passed ball, after coming in to pinch run for Maya Jonhson who reached on a hit by pitch, to tie it up at 3-3.

Michalak hit a double to center field to score Emory Shorts to give the Spartans a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Shorts was on second after hitting a single to lead off and then stealing second.

Lauren Sheehan gave Norfolk State the lead after her bunt single scored Michalak from third.

The Spartans took a 5-3 lead over UMass Lowell heading into the seventh inning, but ultimately fell to the River Hawks 6-5 after totaling four consecutive hits, winning 6-5.

Norfolk State totaled a season-high seven stolen bases and three extra base hits against the River Hawks. The Spartans came into the game ranked 10th in the nation in stolen bases per game (2.88).

The Spartans hit the road for the first time this season, competing in the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. from Mar. 7-8. Norfolk State plays Queens (N.C.) Friday at 10 a.m. and hosts Winthrop at 3 p.m.
