Box Score 2 ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Norfolk State softball team participated in the Winthrop Tournament Friday afternoon in Rock HIll, S.C. for its first road trip of the season, falling to Presbyterian in game one 5-2, before losing to hosts Winthrop, 16-0.
The Spartans (6-9) faced off against the Blue Hose of Presbyterian (11-10) to begin the day, holding the Blue Hose scoreless through five consecutive innings.
Freshman pitcher Amaya McPherson, a two-time MEAC Rookie of the Week nominee, held the Blue Hose to four hits and no runs scored through the first five innings.
Kailey Bryant, the Spartans' leader in RBIs, secured her ninth of the season with a bunt single in the fourth inning to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Bryant has tallied RBIs in seven out of 15 appearances to begin the season.
Three runs in the top of the sixth and two in top of the seventh gave the Blue Hose a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Spartans tried mounting a comeback in the seventh with Emree SKy Obispo leading off. Sky Obispo hit a single in her at-bat to get on for the Spartans.
Bristyl Riddick hit a single to left field to put runners in scoring position for the Spartans. Maddy Morris, who would come in to pinch hit for Maya Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, to keep runners on second and first with one out.
Senior Lauren Sheehan stepped up and hit a huge RBI double to left field to score a run for the Spartans, but it wasn't enough to tie the game. A pop out and a strikeout gave the Blue Hose the 5-2 victory.
In game two against hosts Winthrop, the Spartans fell 16-0 after a 12-run first inning by the Eagles.
The Spartans finish out the Winthrop Tournament against Presbyterian and Western Carolina. The PC game begins at 10 a.m. and the WCU game begins at 12:30 p.m.
