Spartans’ Hot Bats Result in Season-High 11 Hits in Win Over NCCU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. - Norfolk State set a season-high 11 hits in its 10-3 win over North Carolina Central on Saturday. NSU split the series with NCCU, with the Eagles taking game one 6-2.

The Spartans (10-13, 3-2 MEAC) fell 6-2 in game one to the Eagles (4-25, 1-4 MEAC) after giving up 13 hits. 

After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Spartans evened the score with a run in the top of the third on a homerun by Maya Johnson.

Johnson's second home run of the season, tied the game at 1-1, in the top of the third.

The Eagles would go on to score runs one in the top of the third, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth to secure the 6-1 lead.

The Spartans answered with a run in the top of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles would go on to win 6-2.

Game two saw junior Emree Sky Obispo lead the way for the Spartans, totaling a career-high three hits in four at-bats in the win. Obispo singled in each one of her hits.

The Spartans scored runs in sixth out of the seven innings, with six players recording RBIs. Lauren Sheehan and Johnson recorded multi-RBIs performances with two each.

In the first inning, the Spartans took an early 1-0 lead on an error by the Eagles' center fielder that allowed Qween Olivia Edmonds to score after she reached previously on a triple.

NSU took a 2-0 lead in the second Inning after consecutive hits scored in a run for the Spartans. Emory Shorts led off with a single to left center field, before being scored by Maya Johnson's triple to right field.

The Spartans took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, after a sacrifice fly from Kira Turner to score Johnson.

Every opportunity that presented itself to score a runner, Norfolk State capitalized.

In the third inning, the Spartans started with a single by Kailey Bryant. Bryant advanced to second on a passed ball to put a runner in scoring position.

Maddy Morris hit a hard hit double to center field to score Bryant, giving the Spartans a 4-0 lead. Morris would advance to second on a wild pitch before being brought in on a sacrifice fly by Sheehan. 

The Spartans led by 5-0 after three innings.

Two more runs were scored in the top of the fourth by the Spartans to give them a 7-0 lead, after holding the Eagles scoreless through four consecutive innings.

Johnson and Obispo both reached on singles in the top of the fourth. An error by the Eagles' pitcher put Johnson on third and Obispo on second.

A wild pitch scored Obispo from third to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead. The next batter for the Spartans was Edmonds, who hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Johnson, giving the Spartans a 7-0 lead.

The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, to cut into some of the Spartans lead, 7-2.

The Spartans scored one run in the sixth inning on a Bryant sacrifice fly that scored Obispo from third. Obispo singled in her at-bat, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Turner, and advanced to third on an error. 

The Spartans held a 8-2 lead over the Eagles through six innings.

Two more insurance runs were scored by the Spartans in the top of the seventh on a Lauren Sheehan RBI double and a sacrifice by Johnson gave the Spartans a 10-2 lead.

The Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Spartans the 10-3 win.

Brierra Tyler received the win after pitching a complete game allowing six hits, one earned run, with five strikeouts. 

Norfolk State and North Carolina Central continue the series on Sunday, facing off at 1 p.m.
