Norfolk State Sweeps DSU, Taking Final Game of Series 3-2

DOVER, Del. - Norfolk State extended its win streak to three games after defeating the Delaware State Hornets 3-2 in its last game of the series on Sunday.

The Spartans (13-14, 6-3 MEAC) moved to third place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) over fourth-place Delaware State (15-14, 5-4 MEAC) after the series sweep.

Norfolk State is currently behind Morgan State (10-18, 7-2 MEAC) and Howard (14-17, 8-1 MEAC).

Delaware State scored the first run of the game in the second inning to go up 1-0.

The Spartans tied up the score at 1-1 at the top of the third. Kira Turner reached first on an error by the first baseman. Kailey Bryant doubled to advance Turner to third, putting a Spartan in scoring position.

Aniyah Michalak singled on a bunt to score Turner and advance Bryant, tying it at 1-1 through three innings.

Norfolk State held DSU scoreless until they stole home in the bottom of the sixth, garnering a 2-1 lead over the Spartans.

In the top of the seventh and down a run, the Spartans scored two runs to win the game 3-2 over the Hornets.

Back-to-back hits by Emory Shorts with a double and Maddy Morris on a single, put runners on the corners for the Spartans.

Victoria Taylor pinch ran for Morris, advancing to second on a stolen base to put two runners in scoring position for NSU.

Turner beat the throw on a bunt single to score Shorts and advance Taylor to third, tying the game at 2-2.

An error by the Delaware State pitcher allowed Taylor to score the go ahead run from third, after she took off, easily scoring at home. A 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh pitched by McPherson garnered her the win.

McPherson pitched 7.0 innings, allowing only two earned runs and nine hits.
