NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team fell in the series finale 14-7 to Wagner College on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
The Spartans (0-12) accumulated 14 hits while the Seahawks (6-7) produced 13 hits in the win.
Jalan Jones,
Jamal Ritter,
Justin Journette all had three hits on the day in the loss. Ritter led the Spartans with a pair of doubles and RBIs.
Junior
Liam Royster got the start for the Spartans, producing a pair of scoreless innings to start the game while allowing just a pair of hits.
The Spartans got on the board first, scoring their first run in the bottom of the second on a hard single by
Terrence Rhodes through the left side, bringing home
Cam Mazell.
Wagner answered right back with a double out to left field to tie the game up. The Seahawks would also score on a single to right field and a sac fly, taking a 3-1 lead in the top half of the third inning.
NSU took advantage in the bottom half of the same inning, producing four hits in a row that led to a pair of runs, allowing Norfolk State to regain the lead at 4-3. The Spartans tacked on two more runs with
Robert Beatty producing a sac fly. Ritter also scored on the next play following a Seahawks wild pitch.
Wagner continued to produce a strong offensive day, scoring 11 runs through the next three innings, pushing its advantage to 14-6. Jones knocked one over the center field fence to begin the bottom half of the seventh inning for his fourth home run of the season.
Mac Yarbrough and
Yasseel Samboy each produced a strikeout in the final two innings while also holding the Seahawks scoreless.
Norfolk State showed some fight in the bottom half of the ninth inning, with Ritter producing his second double of the day. The Spartans would load the bases, but not score any runs, allowing Wagner to pick up a 14-7 win.
