NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State softball team produced 18 hits across two games, picking up a pair of wins against Coppin State at the NSU Softball Field on Friday afternoon.
GAME 1: Norfolk State 9, Coppin State 0 (5 innings)
The Spartans started off hot, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Senior outfielder
Lauren Sheehan brought in the first run of the game, while
Bristyl Riddick used a two-run RBI single to left center, putting the Spartans up 3-0.
Sheehan provided a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second inning, bringing home
Kira Turner to give Norfolk State a 4-0 lead.
The Spartans continued to provide trouble for the Eagles in the third inning, putting a pair of runners in scoring position with a double steal with no outs. First baseman
Maya Johnson brought both runners home on the next at-bat with an RBI double to right center field, extending the advantage to 6-0.
Norfolk State continued its scoring spree in the third inning, tacking on three more runs with a pair of RBI singles from
Qween Edmonds and Sheehan. The Spartans held the Eagles scoreless through the next two innings, closing out the 9-0 win in game one.
Amaya McPherson (9-6) was credited with the win for NSU, pitching all five innings and producing four strikeouts.
GAME 2: Norfolk State 9, Coppin State 1 (6 innings)
Coppin State looked to bounce back in the second game, scoring the first run of the game on an RBI double to left field. Edmonds helped NSU answer right back, opening the bottom half of the first inning with a triple to left field.
Ennovi Sandoval brought Edmonds home with a sacrifice bunt, tying up the contest.
Johnson gave NSU the 2-1 lead early in the second inning by hitting her third home run of the season. Norfolk State hit two more home runs to open the third with Turner homering to left field, before Edmonds homered to center field. The Spartans extended their advantage to 6-1 late in the inning with a sacrifice fly from
Kailey Bryant and an RBI single from Johnson.
Norfolk State scored its final three runs of the day with three straight singles in the bottom half of the sixth inning, giving the Spartans a 9-1 win.
Kailey Bryant (4-1) received the win, pitching six innings and producing four strikeouts.
