Bryant's Walk-Off Single Plus Tyler's Shutout Equal UMES Sweep

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State outplayed Maryland Eastern Shore in both its doubleheader games against the Hawks on Saturday, winning both games. Game one ended on a Kailey Bryant walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh and in game two the Spartans shutout the Hawks 9-0 through five innings.

The Spartans (14-15, 7-3 MEAC) currently sit third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) after defeating the Hawks (2-28, 1-10 MEAC).

Sophomore Kailey Bryant's RBI single to center field lifted Norfolk State over UMES 4-3, completing the comeback after being down 3-1 through five innings.

The Spartans scored three runs in the seventh on three hits. Maddy Morris reached first for the Spartans with one out. The next batter, Lauren Sheehan, doubled to center field to put runners on second and third for Norfolk State.

Ennovi Sandoval bats next for NSU, hitting her first double of the season to score both Sheehan and Savannah Stover, who came in to pinch run for Morris, to tie the game at 3-3.

With a game plan ready to go, Kira Turner bunted to move Sandoval to third, bringing Kailey Bryant in to bat with two outs, a runner on third, and the game tied.

Bryant's hard hit single up the middle scored Sandoval in walk-off fashion, to give the Spartans a 4-3 victory.

Amaya McPherson struck out a career-high seven batters in the win in 7.0 innings, allowing only seven hits and no earned runs.

The Spartans posted six hits in the bottom of the second to score six runs in their dominant 9-0 victory in game two.

NSU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Kachelle Refour single, which scored Maya Johnson, who doubled, and advanced Brierra Tyler to third, who singled previously.

Refour and Tyler capitalized on a confused Hawks' defense on a double steal attempt, which resulted in Tyler stealing home and Kachelle reaching third, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

A bunt single by Lauren Sheehan scored Refour, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead. After Sheehan stole second, Emory Shorts hit a single to put runners on the corners. Shorts would steal second to put runners on second and third for the Spartans.

The Spartans secured a 5-0 lead, behind a two-run double by Qween Edmonds, scoring both Shorts and Sheehan.

With Edmonds on second, Ennovi Sandoval hit a single through the left side to score Edmonds for the final run of the inning. As Norfolk State led, 6-0, through two innings.

Kailey Bryant, the hero in the Spartans' 4-3 victory in game one, scored the first run in the bottom of the third on a triple to center field, as the Spartans took a 7-0 lead over the Hawks.

The Spartans weren't over yet, with a Sheehan double to right center allowing Bryant to easily score from third. The Spartans took an 8-0 lead over the Hawks with Sheehan's double and advance

Edmonds' sacrifice fly allowed Sheehan to score from third, giving Norfolk State a 9-0 lead.

Tyler pitched her more impressive game this season, allowing no earned runs and only two hits, through 5.0 innings.

Norfolk State ends its series against UMES tomorrow at 1 p.m.
