NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State men's track and field team surged to an early lead on the opening day of the MEAC Outdoor Championships, racking up 44 points to sit atop the team standings.
Delaware State followed the Spartans in second with 20 points, while North Carolina Central sits in third with 19 points.
The Spartans dominated the 10,000 meters, claiming the top four spots.
Gidion Sigei captured the gold with a time of 30:36.11, followed by
Lewis Too in second with a personal-best 31:24.48.
Brian Rotich earned bronze in 31:53.65, while
Basil Koech finished fourth at 32:14.46.
Tafari Bishop posted a personal best time of 50.61 in the 400-meter hurdles to place second and secure a spot in Saturday's final. Senior
Jahquan Christopher also advanced, claiming the final qualifying spot with a time of 55.16.
Norfolk State also made a strong showing in the 200-meter preliminaries, qualifying three athletes for the final.
Vincent Bond Jr. won the event with a time of 21.19, followed by
Kendrick Winfield (3rd - 21.36) and
Christopher Basking (8th - 21.53).
Jaymes Saunders led the Spartans in field events, claiming bronze with a leap of six feet, eight inches.
Atrell Williams also placed fourth in discus (153-01).
The MEAC Championships resume on Friday at 9 a.m. with the continuation of the decathlon.
