NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State women's track and field team secured an impressive second-place finish at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships held on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Mercyline Kimaiyo earned her third MEAC Outdoor Outstanding Runner award, while
Leslie Young collected her fourth MEAC Outdoor Outstanding Field Athlete honor, highlighting the Spartans' standout performances.
D'Nysha Brightful broke her own school record in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 5.75 inches to claim first place. Her teammate
Lexa Hunter followed closely, taking third with a vault of 9 feet, 6.25 inches.
Brooklyn Robinson delivered two top finishes, earning the silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.05 seconds and placing fourth in the 100 meters (11.61 seconds).
The 4x100 relay team consisting of
Kadynce Taylor,
Asiah Wike,
Brandy Hall, and Robinson placed third with a time of 45.60.
Senior
Jahmei Wyatt finished second in the 1,500 meters (4:38.92), followed by Kimaiyo in third (4:40.37) and
Sonia Koech in fifth (4:47.55). Meanwhile, Young returned to the podium by claiming the silver medal in the javelin throw with a distance of 123 feet.
Leanna Lewis led the team in the 800 meters, finishing second with a time of 2:07.59, while Wyatt took sixth (2:16.17). In the 400 meters,
Kadynce Taylor placed fourth (54.86), closely followed by teammate
Kadynce Taylor in fifth (55.16).
Kimaiyo returned to the podium once again in the 5,000 meters, earning the silver medal with a time of 19:05.30.
Abigael Chebet placed third (19:08.86), and Koech finished sixth (19:20.42).
Norfolk State wrapped up the championships with a strong showing in the 4x400 meter relay, where the team of
Kadynce Taylor,
Kalyncia Taylor,
Autumn Burrell, and Lewis earned second place with a time of 3:42.75.
