Bryant’s Dominant Pitching Performance Not Enough in 3-2 MEAC Tournament Loss to Hornets

NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore Kailey Bryant's incredible pitching wasn't enough on Wednesday, as Norfolk State loses 3-2 to Delaware State in the team's first game of the 2025 MEAC Softball Championship at NSU Softball Field.

In Bryant's first career postseason appearance, the Moyock, N.C. native, pitched 7.0 innings, giving up only one run on six hits, whilst striking out four batters.

Bryant tallied consecutive strikeouts and a groundout in a dominant top of the first inning for the Spartans.

NSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bryant hit a triple before Kira Turner scored her from third on a groundout to push the Spartans ahead.

Norfolk State converted a huge 4-6-3 double play in the top of the fifth inning to keep the Hornets scoreless.

Emory Shorts dove for the ball, shuffled it off to Qween Edmonds at second, who then immediately zipped it over to Maya Johnson at first for the inning-ending sequence.

The Hornets tied the game 1-1 in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt. The game went into extra innings after the Spartans failed to score in the bottom of the half inning.

In the top of the eighth, Delaware State took a 3-1 lead after tallying two runs on three hits.

Qween Edmonds started off a rally in the bottom of the eighth with a double to right center, before Lauren Sheehan hit a single to deep right center on the Spartans' next at-bat.

Delaware State pulled out two outs, though, securing the 4-3 result.
