Riddick’s First Collegiate Homer Lifts Spartans to 7-5 MEAC Tournament Win over NCCU

NORFOLK, Va. - Freshman Bristyl Riddick blasted her first collegiate home run over the left centerfield fence in the top of the sixth inning to lead the Norfolk State softball team to a 7-5 win over North Carolina Central on Thursday afternoon.

The Spartans took the lead in the opening fram, holding an advantage the rest of the way. Amaya McPherson pitched 7.0 innings for her eighth complete game of the season and ninth win of the season.

Emory Shorts started Norfolk State's rally in the top of the first inning, scoring Lauren Sheehan from third, to give Norfolk State a 1-0 lead.

Freshman pitcher Amaya McPherson, an All-MEAC Third Team selection, hit a two-run single to extend Norfolk State's lead to three runs over the Eagles in the first.

North Carolina Central responded with a score in the bottom of the first to cut into Norfolk State's advantage, 3-1.

Ennovi Sandoval's hard hit double to right field extended her hitting streak to three games, whilst scoring Qween Edmonds from third who reached previously on a fielder's choice.
 


Kailey Bryant brought in another run on a ground ball,giving Norfolk State a 5-1 lead through two innings.

The Eagles rallied in the bottom of the second and fourth innings, scoring one run and two runs respectively, to bring themselves within one run of the Spartans, 5-4.

Riddick's two-run bomb marked Norfolk State's first home run of the tournament, giving NSU a 7-5 lead in the top of the sixth.
 


NCCU tallied one run in the bottom of the sixth in its attempt to rally back, but were held scoreless in the bottom of the seventh as the Spartans would go on to win, 7-5.

  • With the win over the Eagles, the Spartans will play the winner of No. 6 seed South Carolina State and No. 4 seed Morgan State on Friday at 10 a.m.
