Spartans Show Fight in Road Battle Against Tribe

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.In a battle of Green and Gold, the Norfolk State volleyball team put up a strong fight but fell in three sets to William & Mary on Saturday afternoon.

Junior outside hitter Gabrielle Gilbert paced the Spartans with 14 kills, while senior setter Sydney McCree dished out 27 assists. Defensively, Mya Wood and Mary Nahinu collected eight digs apiece, with Briana Ellis adding three service aces. Freshman Ava Berry anchored the net presence, leading NSU with four blocks.

Norfolk State (0-9) started strong in the opening frame, racing out to an 8-4 lead behind four early kills and an ace from Nahinu. The Spartans maintained momentum, holding a 21-20 edge late in the set, but the Tribe (4-3) closed on a 6-3 run to take it 26-24.

The second set belonged to William & Mary, who built an early 11-3 lead. NSU chipped away with a 9-6 rally featuring five kills, trimming the deficit to 16-12. The Spartans fought back within striking distance at 24-19 before a Tribe kill sealed the frame.

Set three saw back-and-forth action early, with the teams tied at 9-9. Norfolk State briefly surged ahead 12-10 on kills from Berry, McCree, and Gilbert, but William & Mary answered with five straight points. The Spartans clawed back to within 17-16, only to see the Tribe pull away late for a 25-22 win and a 3-0 match victory.

Norfolk State returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 18, when the Spartans face Georgetown at 11 a.m. to open play at the Big Orange Bash, hosted by Clemson University.
