BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Freshman Taiefa Gowe led the Norfolk State women's cross country team Friday morning at the Paul Short Run presented by ASICS at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus Cross Country Course, before the remainder of the meet was ultimately canceled due to heat conditions.
Gowe paced the Spartans from start to finish, crossing the opening mile in 6:11.1. She reached two miles in 13:37.4 before moving up 10 places between the two- and three-mile checkpoints. Gowe passed three miles in 21:18.3 and continued to gain ground over the closing portion of the race, improving another six positions before crossing the finish line 309th overall.
Freshman Sharifa Trocard followed for Norfolk State, completing the 6K in 31:50.8. Trocard opened with a 6:24.0 first mile before moving forward throughout the remainder of the race. She improved seven positions by the two-mile checkpoint, climbed another 11 spots by three miles and gained five more places over the final stretch to finish 314th overall.
Fellow freshman Janaisa Dearry rounded out Norfolk State's finishers with a time of 35:48.0. Dearry also steadily improved her position throughout the race, moving up nine places between the first and second mile and another 12 spots by the three-mile checkpoint before gaining five more positions on the way to the finish.
Freshman Veronica Jesang produced Norfolk State's quickest opening-mile split, crossing the first checkpoint in 5:39.4 while sitting 73rd overall. Senior Abigael Chebet reached the opening mile in 6:07.0. Neither runner recorded a finishing time.
With three runners completing the 6K, Norfolk State did not record a team score in the Women's College Gold race.
