NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team split its opening day at the Spartan Clash on Friday, defeating Rider 5-4 in the season opener before falling 5-1 to Central Connecticut State in game two at the NSU Softball Field.
GAME 1 – NORFOLK STATE 5, RIDER 4
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings, despite Rider stranding two runners in the top of the second. The Broncs broke through in the third inning with a solo home run from Buchanan to take a 1-0 lead, then added another run later in the frame to extend the advantage to 2-0.
Norfolk State responded in the bottom of the third when Kachelle Refour crossed home plate during a Kailey Bryant at-bat, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Spartans seized momentum in the fifth. Back-to-back singles from McKaley Kohn and Refour brought Aniyah Michalak and Julia Kearney home, giving NSU its first lead of the game at 3-2.
Rider evened the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth on a passed ball, but the Spartans answered immediately. In the bottom half, Kearney delivered the decisive blow, a two-run home run over the left-field fence that also scored Bristyl Riddick, putting Norfolk State ahead 5-3.
The Broncs threatened in the seventh, plating one run and leaving two runners stranded, but the Spartans held on for the 5-4 victory.
Bryant earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing four runs on nine hits. She struck out four and recorded nine forceouts and eight groundouts.
GAME 2 – CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE 5, NORFOLK STATE 1
Central Connecticut State struck first in game two, scoring in the top of the first on a single to second base.
Norfolk State quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning when Qween Edmonds launched a solo home run over the right-field wall to tie the game at 1-1.
The Blue Devils regained control in the fourth inning with a go-ahead run, then added another in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-1. CCSU sealed the win with two additional runs in the seventh to make the final score 5-1.
Maddy Morris pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four.
