NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State improved to 3-1 on the season after earning a pair of victories over Central Connecticut State (8-6) and Rider (5-3) on Saturday at the NSU Softball Field.
GAME 1 – NORFOLK STATE 8, CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE 6
Both teams came out swinging, as Central Connecticut State plated three runs in the top of the first inning. Norfolk State immediately answered in the bottom half when Maddy Morris launched a two-run home run to center field, followed by a solo shot from Aniyah Michalak to tie the game at 3-3.
The Spartans seized control in the second inning, adding three more runs. Morris drove in a run after being hit by a bases-loaded pitch to score McKaley Kohn, Michalak followed with an RBI single to center to bring home Kachelle Refour, and Bristyl Riddick singled up the middle to plate Kailey Bryant.
The Blue Devils chipped away with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to cut the deficit to one, 6-5, but Norfolk State responded in the bottom of the sixth. Michalak and Riddick scored on groundouts from Julia Kearney and Maya Johnson, extending the lead to three.
CCSU added one run in the seventh, but the Spartans held on for the 8-6 victory.
Michalak paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a home run. Bryant earned her second win of the season, tossing 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.
GAME 2 – NORFOLK STATE 5, RIDER 3
Norfolk State carried its momentum into game two, striking early in the first inning. Bristyl Riddick crushed a three-run homer to left field, scoring Qween Edmonds and Maddy Morris for a 3-0 advantage.
The Spartans added another run in the second when Riddick delivered an RBI single to score Bryant and make it 4-0.
Rider responded with two runs in the fourth, but Norfolk State answered again as Michalak scored on a Julia Kearney groundout to push the lead to 5-2.
The Broncs added a solo home run in the sixth, but the Spartans closed the door to secure the 5-3 win.

Norfolk State returns to the NSU Softball Field February 20-22 to host the Battle at the Bay, a split-site tournament with Hampton. Maine, Stony Brook, Quinnipiac, and Saint Francis will compete across Hampton Roads.
