NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team blasted three home runs but could not overcome a big fifth inning in a 16-10 loss to Manhattan on Friday evening at Marty L. Miller Field.

Norfolk State dropped to 1-3 on the season, while Manhattan improved to 2-3. Connor Thorneberry (2-1) earned the win for the Jaspers, while
Ethan Blakeney (1-1) took the loss.

Manhattan opened the scoring in the fourth inning, stringing together four hits to plate three runs and take a 3-0 lead. Norfolk State answered in the bottom half when
Mason Mompoint launched a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Jaspers broke the game open in the fifth, capitalizing on three Norfolk State errors to score seven runs on three hits and extend their lead to 10-1. The Spartans responded in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases before
Jaydan Israel drove in a run with an RBI single to right-center.
Justin Journette followed with a two-run single to left field, and
Brendan Burke capped the rally with a three-run home run, trimming the deficit to 10-7 heading into the sixth.

Manhattan added a run in the seventh on an RBI single up the middle to make it 11-7. Norfolk State answered again, as Mompoint knocked in Journette with an RBI single to pull the Spartans within three, 11-8.

The Jaspers pulled away in the eighth, scoring four runs on three hits to extend the lead to 15-8 before adding another run in the ninth. Journette homered to right-center in the bottom of the ninth, driving in Israel, but Manhattan closed out the 16-10 victory.
