Norfolk State Men Capture Five Medals on Day One of MEAC Indoor Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. ---- The Norfolk State Spartans opened the MEAC Indoor Championships with a strong showing Sunday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
 
Norfolk State leads the team standings after the first day with 52.5 points. Delaware State follows with 43 points, while Howard (33), South Carolina State (32), and Morgan State (24) round out the top five.
 
Daniel Mathange delivered the Spartans' lone gold medal of the day, winning the 3,000 meters in 8:17.37.
 
Atrell Williams opened the medal count in the field events, earning silver in the shot put with a throw of 16.19 meters. Landon Walker added another silver by clearing 4.16 meters in the pole vault, while Kristopher Stephens secured bronze in the high jump with a mark of 2.05 meters.
 
The Norfolk State distance medley relay team of Donovan Terry, Lewis Too, Nimporembere Drogba, and Jemmel Green closed the evening with a silver medal, posting a time of 10:01.41.
 
The Spartans also advanced several athletes to Monday's finals. Christopher Basking qualified in the 60 meters with the eighth-fastest time at 6.83. Norfolk State sent two runners to the 400-meter final, led by Kendrick Winfield, who clocked the fastest qualifying time at 47.83. Terry followed with the eighth-best mark at 48.58.
 
Norfolk State qualified three sprinters for the 200-meter final. Winfield continued his strong day with a winning qualifying time of 20.86, while Basking placed fifth at 21.21 and Julian Ward took seventh at 21.36.
 
The Spartans return to action Monday, Feb. 23, as they look to maintain their lead and secure a fifth consecutive MEAC indoor championship.
