Spartans Fall Short Against Mount St. Mary’s

NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
 
Norfolk State slipped to 2-7 on the season, while Mount St. Mary's improved to 4-5. Walker Fuller (0-2) took the loss after pitching five innings, and Eli DeRossi (1-1) earned the win. JB Manarchuck recorded his first save of the season.
 
Norfolk State grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first when Justin Journette launched a solo home run. Mount St. Mary's answered in the second, tying the game on an RBI single to right field.

The Spartans regained momentum in the fourth inning. Cameron Mazell crushed a three-run home run, scoring Ryan Hoeft and Thomas Ealey and pushing Norfolk State ahead 4-1.
 
Norfolk State grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first when Justin Journette launched a solo home run. Mount St. Mary's answered in the second, tying the game on an RBI single to right field.
 
Norfolk State took advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning with a three-run home run from Cameron Mazell to bring home Ryan Hoeft and Thomas Ealey, making it 4-1 Spartans.
 
Mount St. Mary's seized control in the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits, highlighted by a four-RBI home run to take a 6-4 lead. Norfolk State worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth as Tyler Mitchell recorded a strikeout to limit the damage.
 
Ealey singled in the sixth, but the Mountaineers stranded him to maintain the two-run cushion. Emmett Jefferson added a hit in the seventh before Mount St. Mary's closed the inning with two groundouts and a strikeout.
 
In the eighth, Mount St. Mary's placed two runners in scoring position before Yasseel Samboy struck out Evan Meier to end the threat. The Spartans loaded the bases in the bottom half with singles from Ealey and Journette, but Mount St. Mary's escaped with a strikeout to preserve the lead.
 
Norfolk State retired the Mountaineers in order in the ninth, then mounted one last rally. Brendan Burke reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kydese Queen to cut the deficit to one. Mount St. Mary's, however, worked out of the jam to secure the win.
