HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Norfolk State women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to Southern Miss on Feb. 28 at the USM Tennis Complex in nonconference action.
Norfolk State started strong in doubles play, capturing two of the three matches to claim the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of
Ines Sabadie and
Yuliya Yurkova earned a 6-4 victory over Hannah Chambers and Miranda Xu. The Spartans also secured a win at No. 3 doubles, where
Angelina Maniawska and
Elena Martinez Prado defeated Mia Hisashi-Morrissey and Pimmada Lim 7-5. Southern Miss picked up the lone doubles victory at No. 2, where
Kayla Kennedy and
Regina Urbiola fell 6-2 to Angelina Blinova and Sakura Sudo.
The Golden Eagles responded in singles play, winning four of the completed matches to clinch the team victory.
Norfolk State collected its lone singles point at No. 3 singles, where
Regina Urbiola delivered a dominant performance, defeating Hannah Chambers 6-0, 6-0.
Southern Miss earned victories at several positions in the lineup to regain control of the match. At No. 2 singles, Sakura Sudo defeated
Ines Sabadie 6-1, 6-0, while Miranda Xu topped
Elena Martinez Prado 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. The Golden Eagles also secured wins at No. 5 singles, where Kamornwan Kornsila defeated
Angelina Maniawska 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 6 singles, where Gagana Mohan Kumar topped
Irina Iurea 6-3, 6-1 to seal the match.
At No. 1 singles,
Yuliya Yurkova was locked in a tightly contested match with Angelina Blinova when play was halted after Southern Miss clinched the fourth and final point.
