NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team secured the series victory over Delaware State with a 9-3 win over the Hornets on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field. The Spartans improved to 10-10 overall and 2-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.
GAME 3 – Norfolk State 9, Delaware State 3
After a scoreless opening inning, Delaware State struck first with two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Hornets added another run in the fourth inning on a single to right field to extend their advantage to 3-0.
Norfolk State responded by scoring in each of the next three innings to rally for the win.
The Spartans got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Amaya McPherson delivered a sacrifice fly that brought
McKaley Kohn home, and
Maya Johnson later crossed the plate on a throwing error by the second baseman during a
Qween Edmonds at-bat to cut the deficit to 3-2.
NSU took the lead in the fifth inning.
Julia Kearney scored on a Kohn single through the left side to tie the game at three, and
Aniyah Michalak came home on a bases-loaded fielder's choice during Johnson's at-bat to give the Spartans a 4-3 advantage.
The Spartans broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning.
Bristyl Riddick drove in
Kailey Bryant with a bases-loaded groundout before Kohn delivered a single to right field that scored
Maddy Morris and Michalak. Johnson capped the scoring with a two-run home run over the right-field wall to give Norfolk State a 9-3 lead.

Kohn led the Spartans offensively, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Morris and Bryant each collected three hits in four at-bats and scored a run, while Johnson finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Morris earned the win in the circle, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing one run on four hits.

Norfolk State returns to action next weekend when the Spartans travel to Princess Anne, Md., for a MEAC series against Maryland Eastern Shore.
