Spartans Battle in 4-3 Thriller, Respond with Sweep of Virginia State

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State women's tennis team split a pair of midweek matches at the NSU Tennis Complex, falling 4-3 to Longwood before bouncing back with a 4-0 sweep over Virginia State.

LONGWOOD 4, NORFOLK STATE 3
Norfolk State came up just short in a tightly contested match against Longwood on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 decision despite winning the doubles point and two singles flights.

The Spartans opened strong in doubles play, earning victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to secure the early advantage. Irina Iurea and Yana Klimchuk claimed a 6-2 win at No. 2, while Regina Urbiola and Elena Martinez Prado followed with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 to give Norfolk State the 1-0 lead.

In singles action, Norfolk State picked up two key wins to keep the match tight.
  • Yuliya Yurkova earned a hard-fought three-set victory at No. 2 singles (6-1, 2-6, 6-4)
  • Yana Klimchuk added a straight-set win at No. 5 (6-4, 6-3)
Longwood ultimately secured the match by winning four singles courts, including decisive victories at No. 3 and No. 4, while also edging a three-set battle at No. 6 to clinch the 4-3 decision.

Norfolk State responded in dominant fashion on Wednesday, sweeping Virginia State 4-0 at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Spartans set the tone early in doubles play, earning decisive wins on the top two courts to secure the opening point. Yana Klimchuk and Kayla Kennedy delivered a shutout performance at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0 victory, while Irina Iurea and Sabina Iurea followed with a 6-3 win at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, Norfolk State carried that momentum into straight-set dominance across the top of the lineup.
  • Yana Klimchuk led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory
  • Irina Iurea earned a strong straight-set win at No. 2 singles
  • Sabina Iurea followed with a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles to clinch the match
With Norfolk State clinching the match after three completed singles contests, the remaining matches went unfinished as the Spartans secured the shutout.
