NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team dropped the series finale to Mount St. Mary's, 24-7, on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
Norfolk State slipped to 2-8 on the season, while Mount St. Mary's moved to 5-5.
Myles Crocker (0-3) took the loss, and Jakob Foster (1-0) earned the win.
The Spartans jumped out early in the bottom of the second inning.
Cameron Mazell and
Emmett Jefferson opened the frame with doubles, and a double steal by
Jaydan Israel and
Kydese Queen pushed Norfolk State to a 2-0 lead before the Mountaineers escaped the inning.
Mount St. Mary's responded in the top of the third with a three-run home run down the left-field line to take a 3-2 advantage.
Norfolk State reclaimed the lead in the fourth. Jefferson doubled to start the inning, and Israel followed with an RBI groundout to score Queen. Thomas Easley then singled to bring home Jefferson, giving the Spartans a 4-3 edge. Norfolk State loaded the bases later in the inning, but Mount St. Mary's worked out of the jam with a strikeout.
The Mountaineers pulled back in front in the fifth, taking advantage of two Norfolk State errors to move ahead 6-4. Mount St. Mary's added five more runs over the next two innings to extend the lead.
Norfolk State threatened again in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two walks and a single by
Justin Journette.
Mason Mompoint delivered a two-run single, and Mazell followed with an RBI double to right field, trimming the deficit to 15-7.
Mount St. Mary's closed out the win in the ninth, scoring nine runs on seven hits.
