NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team opened Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play in dominant fashion, sweeping Delaware State 7-0 on Saturday morning at the ODU Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 8-7 overall and 1-0 in conference action, while the Hornets fall to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in MEAC play.
Norfolk State seized control early by capturing the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Yuliya Yurkova and Yana Klimchuk led the charge with a convincing 6-1 victory at the top spot, while Regina Urbiola and Angelina Maniawska secured the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Delaware State picked up its lone doubles win at No. 2.
The Spartans carried that momentum into singles play, sweeping all six matches in straight sets to complete the shutout. Yurkova set the tone at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win, while Julia Daroszewska followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2.
Urbiola continued the strong showing at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-0 decision, and Klimchuk added a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position. Elena Martinez Prado and Sabina Iurea rounded out the lineup with matching straight-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
