Urbiola Named MEAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State junior Regina Urbiola earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday afternoon, following a dominant showing at the MEAC Tennis Round Up. 

A native of Querétaro, Mexico, Urbiola delivered a perfect weekend for the Spartans, going 4-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles competition while helping Norfolk State went 3-1 at the event. 

Competing primarily in the middle of the lineup, Urbiola controlled singles play from start to finish. She opened the weekend with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory over Delaware State's Sia Mahajan before following with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Morgan State's Marta Serra-Carles. Urbiola continued her strong play with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Howard's Camille Hall and capped the weekend in dominant fashion with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Coppin State's Sirena Singh. 

In doubles action, Urbiola paired with Angelina Maniawska at the No. 3 position, posting a 3-0 record. The duo secured a 6-2 win over Delaware State and followed with a decisive 6-0 victory against Howard. Urbiola and Maniawska were also leading 6-5 against Morgan State before the match went unfinished, while earning a win by forfeit against Coppin State. 

UP NEXT 
Norfolk State returns home on Wednesday for a cross-bay rivalry matchup against Hampton, marking the second meeting between the teams this season. First serve is set for 9:45 a.m. at the Nat Warren Tennis Center on Norfolk State's campus.
