Norfolk State Falls to FDU, Holy Cross in Saturday Action

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team dropped a pair of games on day two of the Spartan Round-Up at the NSU Softball Field. The Spartans fell 3-1 to Fairleigh Dickinson before dropping a 13-7 decision to Holy Cross.

GAME 1 – FDU 3, Norfolk State 1

The Knights struck first in the opening inning, using an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead before adding two more runs later in the contest to extend the advantage to 3-0.

Norfolk State broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning when Maddy Morris delivered an RBI single to score Kailey Bryant, cutting the deficit to two runs. The Spartans looked to continue the rally with another runner reaching base, but the Knights escaped the inning to preserve the lead.

Bryant and Peyton Moran each recorded a hit for Norfolk State, while Morris drove in the Spartans' lone run.

In the circle, Jaiden Henderson pitched five innings in relief and recorded three strikeouts.

GAME 2 – Holy Cross 13, Norfolk State 7

Norfolk State jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Bristyl Riddick doubled to left field to drive in Maddy Morris and Qween Edmonds. Peyton Moran followed with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Aniyah Michalak to give the Spartans a 3-0 advantage.

Holy Cross responded with five runs in the top of the third inning, highlighted by a grand slam that put the Crusaders ahead 5-3.

The Spartans regained momentum in the fourth inning. Morris reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, allowing Bryant to score, before Riddick reached on a throwing error by the pitcher to bring home Michalak and Morris and give NSU a 6-5 lead. Morris later added an RBI single up the middle to score Bryant and extend the Spartans' lead to 7-5.

Holy Cross erupted in the sixth inning, capitalizing on several Norfolk State errors to take control of the game. Kate Trudgen and Bella Nugent each drove in runs before Emma Pietrzak delivered a two-RBI single to center field. Emily McCandless followed with a two-run double down the left field line, while another run later scored on a throwing error to cap the inning.

The Crusaders added one more run in the seventh as Pietrzak reached on an error, extending the lead to 13-7.
