NSU Returns Home for Five-Game Slate

NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team returns home this week for a five-game homestand at Marty L. Miller Field, hosting Navy, VMI and Central Connecticut State.

ABOUT NORFOLK STATE
The Spartans enter the week 2-11 overall and 0-3 in NEC play after dropping a three-game series to LIU last weekend (15-4, 7-5, 7-4).
 
Justin Journette leads Norfolk State with a .356 batting average, totaling 16 hits, 15 runs scored, 14 RBIs, five home runs and three doubles this season. Freshman Mason Mompoint follows with a .323 average with 10 hits, six RBIs and one home run. Cameron Mazell (.318) and Thomas Ealey (.302) also hit above .300 this season.
 
On the mound, Ethan Blakeney (1-2) leads the Spartans with 17 strikeouts. Walker Fuller (0-3) has recorded 11 strikeouts, while Parker Hampton (1-1) has added nine. Yasseel Samboy (0-0) leads the bullpen with nine strikeouts and a 5.79 ERA.
 
SCOUTING NAVY
Navy enters Tuesday's matchup with an 11-4 record after posting a 4-1 week. The Midshipmen defeated Coppin State 8-7 and won three games against Dartmouth (3-1, 7-8, 3-11, 3-4).
 
Victor Izquierdo leads Navy with a .288 batting average, recording 15 hits, 14 runs scored, 13 RBIs, two triples, two home runs and one double. Andrew Manning also carries a .288 average with 15 hits, along with nine RBIs, eight runs scored, two doubles, one triple and one home run.

On the mound, Owen Phypers (3-0) holds a 1.06 ERA with 14 strikeouts while allowing just two runs this season. Brady Bendik (2-1) owns a 1.21 ERA with 23 strikeouts, while Matt Archibald (1-3) leads the team with 35 strikeouts and a 3.86 ERA.
 
SCOUTING VMI
VMI enters Wednesday's game with a 14-2 record and a five-game winning streak. The Keydets earned four wins last weekend against Western Illinois (8-7, 10-7, 16-6, 9-8).
 
Cole Cook leads the Keydets with a .400 batting average, totaling 20 hits, 25 RBIs, 19 runs scored, 14 stolen bases, seven doubles and six home runs. Ayden Schnarrs ranks second on the team with a .375 average with 15 hits, 12 runs scored, six RBIs and three doubles.
 
On the mound, Hunter Sipe (1-0) leads the team with a 1.83 ERA and 19 strikeouts. Peyton Dhein (2-0) also has 19 strikeouts and carries a 2.84 ERA.
 
SCOUTING CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE
Central Connecticut State enters the week 3-2 overall. The Blue Devils defeated UMES twice last weekend (11-7, 6-1). CCSU concludes its series with UMES on Monday before facing Northeastern on Wednesday.
 
Antonio Ducatelli leads the team with a .400 batting average with eight hits and four RBIs. Brandon O'Neill ranks second with a .385 average, recording five hits, one RBI and one double.
 
On the mound, Kyle Salvati (0-0) leads the team with a 1.08 ERA and seven strikeouts. Bryce DiPiero (1-0) has yet to allow a run through 5.2 innings pitched with two strikeouts.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Norfolk State holds a 1-2 all-time record against Navy. The teams last met in a three-game series in 2013. The Spartans earned a 7-6 win but dropped the other two games, 4-3 and 13-1.
 
NSU is 2-27 all-time against VMI. The teams met in a four-game series last season, with VMI winning 16-4, 13-12, 19-8 and 26-6.
 
The Spartans are 3-7 all-time against CCSU. The teams played a three-game series last season, with Central Connecticut State winning 13-3 and 4-3 before Norfolk State claimed the finale 13-2.
