NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Morgan State at TowneBank Field, earning a 6-1 victory in game one before falling 11-2 (5 innings) in game two.
GAME 1 – NORFOLK STATE 6 – MORGAN STATE 1
After a scoreless opening inning, the Spartans struck first in the second. Qween Edmonds delivered an RBI single to score Julia Kearney and give NSU a 1-0 lead.
Norfolk State extended its advantage in the third inning. Bristyl Riddick drove in Maya Johnson with a double and later came around to score on a groundout by Amaya McPherson, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Morgan State got on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, but the Spartans responded with three runs in the fifth to pull away. Maddy Morris sparked the inning with a solo home run to left field. McPherson followed with an RBI single to score Johnson, and Kearney added another run with a base hit through the left side to bring home Riddick.
Edmonds, Morris, and Riddick each recorded two hits, while Johnson and Riddick scored twice. Morris (9-5) earned the complete-game victory, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six and walking two.
GAME 2: MORGAN STATE 11 - NORFOLK STATE 2 (5 inn)
Both teams scored in the first inning of game two, with Kailey Bryant doubling to left field to bring home Edmonds and even the score at 1-1.
Morgan State took control over the next two innings, plating five runs to build a 6-1 lead. Norfolk State added a run in the third when Savannah Stover scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Bears extended their lead in the fourth on a three-run home run and added two more runs in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.
Edmonds led Norfolk State with a run scored and a hit in two at-bats.
