Spartans Drop Doubleheader Against Le Moyne

NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Le Moyne, falling 10-4 and 15-4 (seven innings) on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

Norfolk State fell to 16-24 (12-12 NEC), while Le Moyne improved to 14-21 (14-10 NEC).

GAME 1: NORFOLK STATE 4, LE MOYNE 10
Le Moyne rallied late to defeat Norfolk State 10-4 in game one. Tyler Mitchell (1-2) took the loss in relief, while Parker Hampton threw six scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Donovan Whitfield pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and recorded two strikeouts.

Thomas Ealey, Ryan Hoeft, Josiah Harrison and Hunter Gillespie each recorded one hit. Jaydan Israel scored two runs to lead Norfolk State, while Ealey and Gillespie each added one.

Norfolk State grabbed an early lead after two scoreless innings, capitalizing on a throwing error to score Ealey and Israel for a 2-0 advantage.

The Spartans extended the lead in the fifth inning on a two-run single to left-center field, scoring Israel and Gillespie to make it 4-0.

Norfolk State held Le Moyne scoreless until the seventh inning, when the Dolphins erupted for seven runs on six hits. Consecutive singles drove in two runs before Le Moyne drew a bases-loaded walk. The Dolphins added a two-run double to right-center field, a sacrifice fly and a run on a wild pitch to take a 7-4 lead.

Le Moyne added three more runs in the ninth inning. An RBI single to right-center field plated the first run, and a single up the middle drove in two more to seal the 10-4 win.

GAME 2: NORFOLK STATE 4, LE MOYNE 15 (7 inn.)
Le Moyne controlled game two from the start and defeated Norfolk State 15-4 in seven innings. Myles Crocker (0-5) took the loss after starting on the mound. Nyenati Snoh, Ryan Sellers, Walker Fuller and James Godfrey each appeared in relief.

Justin Journette and Harrison each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Kydese Queen finished 2-for-3. Cameron Mazell, Israel, Ealey, Hoeft and Mason Mompoint each added a hit.

Le Moyne carried its momentum into game two, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on a grand slam to left field. Norfolk State answered in the bottom half of the inning. Journette drove in the first run with a single to left-center field, and Harrison followed with an RBI double to right-center field to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Dolphins responded in the second inning with a bases-loaded walk and their second grand slam to push the lead to 9-2. Le Moyne added three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to extend the advantage to 14-2.

An RBI single in the fifth inning pushed the lead to 15-2 before Mazell delivered a two-run single to right field to make it 15-4. Le Moyne held Norfolk State scoreless over the final two innings to secure the win.

Norfolk State returns to action on the road against No. 10 Virginia on Wednesday, April 29, at 2 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
