WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Norfolk State softball team clinched the series over Howard with an 8-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Nationals Youth Academy, closing out the regular season and MEAC play on a high note. With the win, the Spartans improve to 22-19 overall and 12-9 in conference play, while the Bison fall to 25-17 (18-3 MEAC).
GAME RECAP
Norfolk State carried its momentum from Saturday into Sunday, striking early with a four-run first inning to seize control.
Kachelle Refour and
Kailey Bryant opened the game with back-to-back singles before
Maddy Morris delivered a two-run double to give NSU a 2-0 lead.
Aniyah Michalak followed with a two-run home run to center field, extending the advantage to 4-0.
The Spartans' defense held Howard scoreless through the first two innings before adding to the lead in the third.
Maya Johnson launched a solo home run to right field to make it 5-0.
Norfolk State continued to apply pressure in the fifth inning. Bryant led off with a triple and later scored on a bunt by Michalak. Morris added another run, scoring on a groundout by Johnson to push the lead to 7-0.
Howard broke through in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 7-2.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Morris capped the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh. The Spartans' defense closed the door in the bottom half, retiring the Bison in order to secure the 8-2 victory.
