CLINTON, S.C. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team secured a hard-fought 4-3 non-conference victory over Presbyterian College on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Spartans improved to 12-8 overall heading into a key MEAC matchup against South Carolina State.
Presbyterian jumped out to an early lead, claiming the doubles point to take a 1-0 advantage. The duo of
Boris Lunin and
Dominik Simunovic held a 5-4 lead at the No. 2 position before the Blue Hose clinched the point.
Norfolk State responded in singles play, leveling the match at 2-2 with wins at the No. 5 and No. 2 flights.
Kasper Kulpa got the Spartans on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Victor Mayer at No. 5, followed by
Szymon Malecki, who evened the score with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dario Navarro at No. 2.
The Spartans took their first lead of the match at 3-2 after
Marcin Andrzejczak battled back for a three-set victory at the top spot, defeating Daksh Prasad 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Presbyterian answered to tie the match at 3-3, winning a tightly contested three-set match at No. 4 over
Dominik Simunovic, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.
With the match on the line,
Szymon Janzen delivered in the clutch, earning a three-set victory over Gabriel Godroy, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, to clinch the match for Norfolk State.
