ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Norfolk State softball team dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader to South Carolina State at the Lady Bulldog Softball Field. The Spartans fall to 17-13 overall and 7-4 in MEAC play, while the Lady Bulldogs improve to 13-11 (8-3 MEAC).
The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Saturday at 12 p.m.
GAME 1 – SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 6, NORFOLK STATE 2
After a scoreless first inning, Norfolk State struck first in the second. Amaya McPherson delivered an RBI double to right field, bringing home Aniyah Michalak for a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans added to their advantage in the fifth inning when Qween Edmonds singled to center field to score Julia Kearney, extending the lead to 2-0.
South Carolina State responded with a big inning in the bottom half of the fifth, plating six runs to take control of the game. The Lady Bulldogs used a pair of hits, a wild pitch, and a groundout to account for the scoring.
McPherson led the Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Michalak and Kearney accounted for Norfolk State's runs.
Maddy Morris took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) while striking out three. McPherson closed the game with 1.2 innings of relief.
GAME 2 – SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 11, NORFOLK STATE 4
Norfolk State opened the scoring in game two, as Maddy Morris came home on a wild pitch in the first inning.
South Carolina State answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead, capitalizing on timely hits and a Spartan error.
The Spartans responded in the second inning with two runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. Maya Johnson drove in Amaya McPherson with a double, and Qween Edmonds followed with an RBI single to score Johnson.
After holding S.C. State scoreless in the second, the Lady Bulldogs added two runs in the third to extend their lead to 6-3.
Both teams scored in the fourth inning, with Morris driving in Edmonds on an RBI single to make it 7-4. South Carolina State then broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning, pushing the lead to 11-4.
Norfolk State was unable to mount a comeback, leaving runners stranded in the sixth before being retired in order in the seventh.
Edmonds led the Spartans offensively, going 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI, and one run scored.
Kailey Bryant was charged with the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) over two innings. Samantha Stevenson pitched the final four innings in relief, giving up six runs (four earned) while striking out two.
