COLLEGE PARK, Ga. – Kasper Kulpa knocked off the No. 3 seed to reach the Flight A singles quarterfinals, leading the Norfolk State men's tennis team at the 25th Annual ITA HBCU National Tennis Championships at the South Fulton Tennis Center.

Kulpa, unseeded in a 32-player draw, opened with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Martin Catrice (Alabama State), then took out No. 3 seed Fatih Sisic (Xavier Univ. of Louisiana) 6-2, 7-5 to reach the last eight. No. 5 seed Rafael Padilha (Hampton) ended the run 6-2, 6-4 on Friday afternoon. Padilha went on to reach the semifinals.

No. 2 seed Szymon Malecki joined Kulpa in the quarterfinals and came within a tiebreak of the semifinals. After a first-round bye, Malecki handled Raphael Ankrah 7-5, 6-3, then took the opening set from No. 7 seed Christian Sanchez (Xavier Univ. of Louisiana) before falling 6-7(3), 6-4, [10-8]. Sanchez won the Flight A championship two days later.

Top seed Marcin Andrzejczak also pushed his match to a deciding tiebreak. Andrzejczak dropped the opening set to Hung-Yu Chen (Jackson State), forced a decider by taking the second 7-5, then lost 11-9. He opened the consolation bracket with an 8-2 win over Sebastian Griffiths (Alcorn). Marcin Dójczynski did not finish his opening match against Hlib Kovalenko (Alcorn).

Flight B produced three close matches. No. 4 seed Patryk Kowal won the opening set against Aryan Arora (Hampton) before falling 3-6, 6-2, [10-3]. No. 2 seed Szymon Janzen lost 6-3, 6-1 to Edilson Rosa (Xavier Univ. of Louisiana), and senior Luka Cvjetkovic fell 6-3, 6-2 to Emmanuel Wettey (Tuskegee). All three rebounded in consolation play, where Kowal beat Neil J B King (Tuskegee) 8-4 and Janzen shut out Justice Wilson (Tuskegee) 8-0.

The Spartans entered three teams in Flight A doubles and drew difficult Round of 16 matchups against teams that all advanced at least to the semifinals. Dójczynski and Kulpa pushed Christian Sanchez and VanDer Woody (Xavier Univ. of Louisiana) to a tiebreak before falling 7-6(7). No. 2 seeds Andrzejczak and Malecki lost 6-1 to Vicent Llobell Buigues and Joseph Puig McCallan (Alcorn), who reached the final. No. 3 seeds Kowal and Janzen fell 6-1 to Hlib Kovalenko and Emre Atlamis (Alcorn).

The Spartans return to action Oct. 1-3 when they travel to Cary, N.C., to compete in the second annual MEAC Individual Championships.
