Coppin State Sweeps Spartans in Gill Gymnasium

NORFOLK, Va. — Coppin State hit .376 and served 10 aces in a 3-0 win over Norfolk State (25-14, 25-21, 25-11) on Sunday afternoon in front of 354 at Gill Gymnasium.

Kyleigh Moore led the Spartans with eight kills at .375, and Gabrielle Gilbert added four kills, two aces and six digs. Jasmine Mataira ran the offense with 18 assists.

Norfolk State (3-11, 0-2 MEAC) was held to .084 and 21 kills. Coppin State (10-5, 2-0 MEAC) got 15 kills without an attack error from Deviana Walker, who finished at .625.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1 (CSU 25-14): The teams traded points to a 4-4 tie before Coppin State edged ahead. A Reagan Chisholm kill and a Cherisse Atilano attack error pulled the Spartans within 14-11, but Andrea Cintron answered with four consecutive service aces to make it 19-11 and Norfolk State could not recover.

Set 2 (CSU 25-21): Trailing 8-6, the Spartans put together their best stretch of the afternoon as Gilbert served five straight points — two aces sandwiched around an Isis Castille kill and a Moore kill — for an 11-8 lead. A Moore-Chisholm block pushed it to 12-9 and two more Moore kills made it 14-12, but Coppin State responded with five in a row to go up 17-14. An Aliyah Torres ace got Norfolk State within 17-16 before the Eagles pulled away.

Set 3 (CSU 25-11): Norfolk State opened with a lead on an Ava Berry-Chisholm block and a Berry kill, and the set was tied 5-5. Coppin State then scored five straight, three on Rori Gray kills, to build a 17-8 cushion and closed the match from there.

SPARTAN STANDOUTS

Chisholm contributed two kills and three block assists, while Jala Dixon and Catori Crawford each added two kills. Crawford and Jazeli Vandenburgh chipped in five and six digs, respectively.
