RICHMOND, Va. — Senior Abigael Chebet led a young Norfolk State lineup that featured three freshmen among its five entries as the Spartans placed 12th in a 16-team field Saturday at the Spider Alumni Open, hosted by the University of Richmond at Pole Green Park.
Chebet covered the 4,000-meter course in 16:04.3, a 6:27.3 mile average, and was in the top 40 at the two-kilometer checkpoint before finishing as Norfolk State's top runner. Junior Amira Dailey came through next in 16:27.8, giving the Spartans a pair of scorers inside 16:30.
Freshmen made up the rest of the Norfolk State scoring five in their collegiate debuts. Taiefa Gowe was third across for the Spartans in 17:22.7, followed by Sharifa Trocard in 18:26.0 and Veronica Jesang in 23:34.6.
The Spartans finished with 341 points, ahead of Catholic, Marymount (Va.), Virginia State and Richard Bland. William & Mary won the team title with 56 points, followed by Georgetown (71) and host Richmond (73). Hampton's Peninah Mutisya won the individual race in 13:55.4.
