Biography

2006-07 (Junior Year)
Started 25 of the team’s 30 games at point guard…led the team and ranked 13th in the MEAC with 68 assists, an average of 2.3 per game…either led or tied for the team-lead in assists in 13 games…had 26 steals (0.9 per game), good for second on the team…dished out a career-high seven assists against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (12-19-06)…handed out five assists at Bethune-Cookman (1-8-07)…scored in double figures twice…tallied a career-high 12 points at Florida Atlantic (12-2-06)…had 10 points at New Mexico State (12-28-06)…had three steals in a game twice, both coming against Bethune-Cookman (1-8-07 and 2-5-07)…awarded the athletics department’s James D. Gill Scholarship, presented annually to a student-athlete with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

2005-06 (Sophomore Year)
Saw action in 18 games off the bench at the point guard spot…averaged 9.1 minutes, 0.9 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game…averaged better than 17 minutes per game in the final seven contests of the season after earning the back-up point guard role…one of only two Spartans to finish the season with more assists (14) than turnovers (11)…had two assists in a game on five occasions…had two steals and two assists at South Carolina State (2-27-06)…had a season-high four points in the win over Bethune-Cookman (3-1-06)…had four rebounds and two assists in the MEAC Tournament win over Maryland Eastern Shore (3-7-06).

2004-05 (Sophomore Year)
Walked on to the team…played in 15 games with one start, vs. North Carolina A&T (2-14-05)…averaged 0.9 points and 0.9 rebounds in 5.9 minutes per game…played a season-high 28 minutes against Florida A&M (2-5-05), tying his career high with four rebounds…shot 39 percent from the floor (5-of-13) and 33 percent from 3-point range (2-of-6) on the season…averaged 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds per game in conference play…recorded season highs of five points and four rebounds against Coppin State (1-31-05)…was 2-of-3 from the field and 1-of-1 from behind the arc in that game…scored his first career point and added two rebounds at Savannah State (1-5-05).

High School
Lettered three years in basketball and three in soccer…averaged 11.2 points per game as a senior…also contributed 5.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game…helped team to Metro 4-A conference championship and to the regional semifinals…was a two-time Metro 4-A all-conference selection…was honorable mention all-city as a junior and senior…averaged 13.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg and 4.1 apg as a junior…was also an all-conference soccer player as a senior, when he scored 12 goals.

Born Rashid Akbar Cann on July 10, 1986…son of Carmen Barrantes and Reginald Cann…step-father is Paulo Barrantes…last name is pronounced “Conn”…majoring in Kinesiotherapy…wants to play pro basketball or obtain a doctoral degree in physical therapy.
