The 2014 season will be Lamar Manigo’s first year on the NSU football staff. He will coach the tight ends.
Manigo comes to NSU after serving as receivers coach for the past three seasons at MEAC member North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C. In 2013, Manigo helped tutor Adrian Wilkins, who achieved career highs in receptions and yards and led the MEAC in all-purpose yardage. The previous season, Manigo helped NCCU record its first winning season at the Division I level with a 6-5 mark. Manigo helped leading receiver Geovonie Irvine finish his career second in school history in receptions. Irvine was one of four Eagle receivers to catch at least 20 passes that year.
In his first year at NCCU (2011), three members of the Eagles’ receiving corps (Demario Lackey, Marvin Poole and Jonathan Nicely) recorded career highs in either receptions or receiving yards. That group helped NCCU finish fourth in the MEAC in passing offense, at 203 yards per game.
Prior to arriving in Durham, Manigo spent the first four years of his coaching career at Prairie View A&M in Prairie View, Texas. Manigo served as Prairie View’s offensive graduate assistant in 2007 and 2008 before being promoted to receivers coach prior to the 2009 season. He served in that role for two seasons before moving to NCCU.
In 2010 at PVAMU, Manigo pupil Shaun Stephens earned All-SWAC honors after tallying career highs in receptions (63), yards (859) and touchdowns (nine) and ended his career second all-time in receptions in school history. In his first year as receivers coach, Manigo helped the Panthers win their first SWAC title since 1965. Senior receiver Gabe Osaze-Ediae earned all-conference honors with career highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns.
Prior to arriving at Prairie View, Manigo played collegiately at Bowie State University and was a four-year starter at quarterback from 2003-06. While at BSU, he served as team captain for three years and set BSU records for most touchdown passes in a career, season and game. In 2005, Manigo led the Bulldogs to the CIAA championship game following an eight-win season in addition to a berth in the Pioneer Bowl. After a solid 2006 campaign, Manigo was named Bowie State’s Offensive MVP.
Manigo graduated from BSU in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He also earned a master’s degree in counseling from Prairie View A&M in 2009. Manigo was also selected to attend the NCAA Future Coaches Academy in 2009.
