Lamont Butler will begin his first season as a member of the coaching staff for Norfolk State University where he will coach the defensive line. He brings over 14 years of experience into this role.
Butler came from Concordia University Chicago where he served in the role as Defensive Coordinator. During his time at Concordia Butler’s defensive unit saw major improvements. In 2022 he implemented a new defensive scheme which saw opponents points per game decrease by 11% as wel as decreased 3rd down percentage by 17% in the previous season. They also ranked 20th in the NCAA in Defensive Touchdowns. During the 2021 campaign Butler’s defensive unit decreased opponent rushing total by 22% as well as improved in their total defense in conference. Butler coached and All-Conference defensive lineman in 2021, had 2 All-Conference Defensive lineman and an All-Conference Linebacker in 2022.
Butler came to CUC from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill., where he served as the head coach of the program for the last three seasons. During that time, he helped his program retain double the amount of student-athletes from years past. On the field, he coached an NAIA All-American, All-Midwest Conference First Team linebacker and All-Midwest Conference First Team wide receiver during his time.
In 2016, Butler worked with a defensive unit that included Trinity's first-ever William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist in linebacker Riley Schussler, and cornerback Jarell Carter, who would go on to earn an invitation to rookie mini-camp with the Chicago Bears after a successful senior campaign. The defense would record 23 sacks throughout the year, the second-highest total over the past 12 years.
In 2012 at TIU Butler helped coach the rushing game to one of their best campaigns in program history in 2012, when then-freshman Chris Elliott was named to the All-MSFA Midwest League First Team. Elliott set a new MSFA record with 347 rushing yards in a single game that season, and went on to break the all-time TIU rushing record as a senior in 2015.
Nine players have earned MSFA honors while playing under Butler as head coach. Additionally, two have earned All-NCCAA football honors.
After the 2012 campaign, Butler left TIU to become the head coach at Horizon Christian Academy in San Diego, California. His offense set new school records in 2014 in total offense, points per game, and passing yards, as HCA had two receivers record over 1,000 yards on the year. In the classroom, Butler's program produced 19 members of the Union Tribune San Diego All-Academic Team.
Butler played collegiately as a linebacker and defensive end at Grossmont Junior College in 2004 and 2005 before finishing his college career at Sacramento State University in 2006 and 2007. He graduated from Sacramento State with a degree in organizational communications in 2007.
Lamont and his wife Janine have 2 sons, Langston and Liam.
