Matthew Kooiman is in his first year as director of football operations at Norfolk State University. In his role, he oversees team operation, recruiting, academic and administrative tasks related to the Spartan football program.
Kooiman comes to NSU from Northwestern University, where he served as a scouting assistant for the Wildcats for the past two seasons. Kooiman’s responsibilities included supporting position coaches in the evaluation process of offensive line, tight end and special teams prospects, film analysis of recruits, building relationships with prospects and overseeing travel for members of the coaching staff.
Before moving into the role of scouting assistant, Kooiman also served as an operations assistant at Northwestern. In that capacity, he coordinated administrative tasks for recruit official visits and helped run major events at NU such as the spring game, prospect camps, junior day and pro day.
Prior to his time at Northwestern, Kooiman served as an operations assistant with the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL in 2020. He assisted with team travel and filming and editing of practice footage among other tasks.
Kooiman graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois, as a double major in sports management and business administration. A football letterman at Olivet Nazarene, Kooiman was a member of the Dean’s List each semester.
