Kelvin Hawkins embarks on his 22nd year working with the men’s basketball program for the 2024-25 season. After holding the title of director of basketball operations for five years, he will now enter his ninth season as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach.
 
After serving as a volunteer assistant coach his first eight seasons with the program, Hawkins became the director of operations in 2011-12 when NSU won the MEAC Championship and upset No. 2 seed Missouri in the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Spartans won their second-ever MEAC title in 2020-21 and later defeated Appalachian State in the NCAA First Four. The Spartans also won the regular season title that year by tying for first in the MEAC Northern Division at 8-4.
 
He held the director of operations title in 2012-13 when NSU followed up its 2012 conference championship with a 16-0 MEAC regular season record. The Spartans have made eight postseason appearances in the last nine years of postseason, including in 2019 when they secured the league’s automatic bid to the NIT and upset No. 1 seed Alabama in the first round.
 
The Spartans also went to the NIT in 2013 and to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament from 2014-17.
 
Hawkins has also served as a volunteer assistant football and boys basketball coach at Indian River High School in Chesapeake since 1999. In his spare time, Hawkins also runs the Coach Hawk Basketball Clinic each summer for under-privileged children in the Hampton Roads area.
 
A Chesapeake native, Hawkins graduated from NSU with a bachelor’s degree in recreation in 1990.
