After an illustrious playing career at the collegiate and professional levels, Kayla Roberts returns to her alma mater for the 2022-23 season, this time on the bench instead of the court. The former Norfolk State star has settled into a new role as NSU Women’s Basketball’s Director of Alumni Relations and Player Development.
 
Roberts competed professionally in multiple locations, including Sweden and Australia, since 2018. Most recently, she player for the Mexican club, Barreteras, averaging 12.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game. She scored a season-high 23 points against Quetzales to open the 2021 season, adding six rebounds and four steals.
 
The 6-1 forward racked up numerous accolades during her time at NSU, etching herself in the school’s record books. Her career totals currently place her eighth in school history for points (1,398), second in blocked shots (152), third in rebounds (985), second in defensive rebounds (724), seventh in made free throws (285), ninth in made 3-pointers (87), 10th in made field goals (513), and 10th in rebounding average (8.6). She finished just 15 rebounds short of becoming the first 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound player in NSU women’s basketball history.
 
Roberts is the only Norfolk State women’s basketball player to earn All-MEAC First Team honors twice, and the program’s only MEAC Rookie of the Year recipient. She was selected to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Second Team twice and the BOXTOROW All-America Second Team once.
 
As a senior, Roberts led the Spartans to a 17-11 regular season record, going 11-5 in conference play. She averaged 14.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game that season.
 
Roberts burst onto the scene as a freshman, earning All-MEAC Second Team honors in addition to her MEAC Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie Team selections. During her most dominant stretch, she recorded a career-high 26 points and 25 rebounds against Hampton, before adding 26 points and 15 rebounds against Howard in her next game. She became the second player in NSU’s Division I history with a 25-rebound performance.
 
 Roberts graduated from Norfolk State in 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in sociology.
