Kevin Lynum joins the Norfolk State women’s basketball coaching staff ahead of the 2022-23 season with nearly a decade of high-level coaching experience.
Prior to his time at NSU, Lynum served from 2020-22 as the director of athletics at Southeast High School, a public school in Bradenton, Fla. He was responsible for the management and oversight of 22 interscholastic athletics programs, including one FHSAA State Championship team.
Lynum’s most recent coaching stint came with the Florida A&M women’s basketball program from 2018-20. After starting off as an assistant coach, he was named interim head coach late in the season, immediately leading the Rattlers to a win in his opening game.
FAMU named Lynum the permanent head coach of the women’s basketball program after the 2018-19 campaign’s conclusion. In his lone season at the helm, Lynum’s Rattlers earned six wins, three more than the previous year.
While at FAMU, Lynum recruited and developed multiple All-MEAC honorees, including MEAC Rookie of the Year Alaina Rice and All-Rookie Team selection Mya Moye. His leadership as head coach helped the women’s basketball team earned the highest team GPA of all 16 intercollegiate athletic programs on campus and the highest term GPA in program history.
Before his time at FAMU, Lynum was he top assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2017-18 season at Winthrop University. He helped Winthrop sign two 3.5-star prospects per prospectsnation.com, serving as the primary recruiter for Big South All-Freshman Team selection Anika Riley.
Lynum spent one year at Northwest Kansas Technical College, serving as head women’s basketball coach as well as sports information director. He led the team to a 28-2 (.933) overall record, the most single-season wins in program history. After taking the squad to the NJCAA Region VI Tournament, Lynum was named a finalist for the WBCA/Marine Corps Junior College National Coach of the Year Award.
During his lone season at Northwest Kansas, the team finished in the top five nationally in scoring average, rebounding, assists, and steals. He recruited and coached two WBCA All-Americans, as well as five players who’d earn scholarships at Division I scholarships.
Lynum was the top assistant women’s basketball coach, recruiting coordinator, and head junior varsity coach at Southwestern College from 2015-16 prior to landing at Northwest Kansas. He coached two all-conference selections with the Builders.
Getting his coaching career underway, Lynum was the top assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Warner University from 2013-14. He coached two all-conference selections, helping the program earn nine more wins than the season prior to his arrival.
Lynum graduated from American Military University in 2012 with his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, before earning a Masters in Business Administration from Warner in 2015. He received a Masters in Education at Florida A&M in 2020. He received his Doctor of Education from Southwestern College in 2023.
