Former Spartan standout Melvina Brown begins her first season as volunteer assistant coach with the Norfolk State volleyball program in 2021. No stranger to NSU, she competed for the Spartans during the 2016 and ’17 seasons.
Brown served as the starting libero those two years, ranking seventh in the MEAC as a senior in 2017 in aces per set (0.32) and ninth in digs (3.42). She stood fifth in the league in digs her junior year in 2016 at 3.72 and seventh in aces (0.33), while also ranking No. 119 in the nation in aces.
She was named to both the Phoenix Classic and Red Flash Classic all-tournament teams during her time at NSU in addition to earning the MEAC Defensive Specialist of the Week Award during her junior year. Brown finished her career ninth all-time at NSU in digs with 637. She competed at West Virginia her first two years of college before transferring to Norfolk State.
A native of Warrenton, Virginia, Brown was named the District 27 Player of the Year during her junior and senior seasons at Kettle Run High School in addition to Female Athlete of the Year by the Fauquier Times Democrat. She also earned all-region and all-state honors in track and field.
Brown coached with the American Volleyball Club in Manassas, Virginia following her graduation from NSU. She also served as a substitute teacher.
A member of the AD Honor Roll and the MEAC All-Academic Team during her time at NSU, Brown was also named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team in 2016. She graduated in the fall of 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication.
