Blueford, Roberts Lead NSU over WSSU

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Shardonay Blueford (Chesapeake, Va.) and Yolanda Roberts (Virginia Beach, Va.) each had 10 kills in the Spartans' 3-0 win over Winston-Salem State (1-10) at the C.E. Gaines Center Thursday night. NSU (2-12) downed the Lady Rams 30-27, 30-20, 30-14.

Blueford hit .375 with seven digs and one service ace, while Roberts had five digs, three aces, and a .381 hitting percentage. 

Vanessa Faircloth (Lumberton, N.C.) and Heather Quinn (Conyers, Ga.) also had a productive night, with each registering a .500 attack percentage and eight kills. Faircloth had the Spartans' only solo block of the night.

NSU dominated the match on offense, recording 44 kills to the Rams' 25 and hitting 12 aces to WSSU's three. Defensively, the Spartans had 35 digs and four total blocks.

Other Spartan highlights include a team hitting percentage of .349 for the match and .632 in the third game of the match. Every Spartan had at least one kill with each of them recording positive hitting percentages.

Ashley Harris, Georgette Allen, and Lore McBroom led WSSU with five kills each. Valentina Pushkina had 20 assists.

The Spartans will stay in Winston-Salem to participate in the 7th Annual Lady Rams Invitational Tournament. The Spartans open with North Carolina Central at 1 p.m. on Friday at the C.E. Gaines Center.
