NORFOLK, Va.
— Kandace Davis had team-highs of 12 points and nine rebounds as the Towson University Tigers spoiled the home debut of Norfolk State head coach Tara A. Owens with a 76-55 win Friday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

Towson (2-0) has now won six straight season openers and improves to 4-0 all-time against the Spartans (0-1).

Simona Petronyte and Dovile Miliauskaite each added 10 points for the Tigers, who outrebounded NSU 42-33.

NSU got on the board first with a jumper by Ebony Gibbs (Petersburg, Va.) with 19:10 left in the first half. An Areya Walker (Portsmouth, Va.) layup put the Spartans up 4-0, but Davis answered with a jumper on the other end to cut the lead 4-2.

Davis hit a layup with 7:18 left in the half to break a 14-all tie and give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish. NSU got as close as two, 20-18 on a bucket by Walker, but went into half-time down 32-22.

In the second half, Towson led by as many as 26, 69-43, after a jumper by Petronyte with 1:55 left in the game. Hampered by turnovers and rushed shots, the Spartans had several scoreless stretches from which they could not recover.

Walker led the Spartan effort with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Freshman Natasha Huntley (Greensboro, N.C.) scored 13 points in her debut as a Spartan. Gibbs had seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds, while Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) and Ashley Compton (Houston, Tex.) each had six points and two rebounds.

For the game, NSU shot 38.5 percent from the field (20-of-52), 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from three-point range, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free-throw line.

The Spartans will travel to Richmond, Va. on Tuesday to take on Virginia Union at 6 p.m.
